FMD FIREBIRDS WIN FIRST PLACE

Mahom-jeh-gah! On March 25, 2025, the Fort McDowell Firebirds brought their energy and spirit to the Senior Games held at Ak-Chin, entering the Chair Volleyball Tournament with plenty of enthusiasm and team pride. But that wasn’t the only event that had the crowd buzzing.

Elders Leila Williams and Spencer Bear proudly represented the community in the much-anticipated Oompa-Loompa contest—a quirky and entertaining team challenge that involves two volunteers balancing a 4–5-foot round ball on participants’ shoulders as they race to the finish line without dropping it. It’s no easy task, demanding balance, coordination, and a whole lot of trust and teamwork.

Spectators roared with laughter and applause as Leila and Spencer took on the challenge with determination and a great sense of humor. Even when things got wobbly, the spirit never faltered—there may have been a few wipeouts, but every stumble was met with cheerful laughter and encouragement from the crowd.

In the end, their efforts paid off: Leila and Spencer took home the first place prize—a well-deserved victory that reminded everyone that they’ve still got it! The Fort McDowell community couldn’t be prouder. Way to go, Firebirds!
