THE PHOENIX ZOO COMES TO THE LIBRARY

On June 2, 2025, the Fort McDowell Library buzzed with excitement as the Phoenix Zoo brought some special visitors to the students of the H’man Shawa Early Childhood Development Center. With a cowboy hat perched atop his head and boundless enthusiasm in his step, animal handler Benjamin Brose introduced the young audience to a lively lineup of zoo animals, including lizards, a curious tarantula, and even a tenacious armadillo.

The children were wide-eyed with wonder, their faces lighting up as each animal made its entrance. Some leaned in close, their fingers clutching imaginary science goggles as they examined every scale, leg, and shell with innocent fascination. Gasps, giggles, and excited whispers filled the room as Brose moved through the crowd, letting the students get an up-close look at the animals. For many, it was their very first encounter with such animals—and the experience sparked a sense of awe that only nature can inspire.

This engaging visit was part of the Phoenix Zoo’s partnership with local libraries for their annual summer reading program. This year’s theme, “Color Our World,” runs from June 1 to August 1 and celebrates the vibrancy of nature, imagination, and storytelling. Families are encouraged to join in the fun by logging reading hours, exploring themed activities, and earning prizes along the way.

The day ended with smiles. A few brave students even petted a lizard! For the children of the H’man Shawa Center, it was a magical journey into the animal kingdom, right in the heart of their local library. Truly, it was a wild and wonderful day to remember!
