JUDGE BRIAN P. UTSEY SWORN IN AS CHIEF JUDGE

On June 2, 2025, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation welcomed its new Chief Judge, Brian P. Utsey, in a formal swearing-in ceremony held at the Public Safety Building. The oath of office was administered by President Sandra Pattea.
Judge Utsey brings nearly two decades of legal experience dedicated to serving tribal communities. He holds both a Juris Doctorate and a Master of Laws in Native American and Indigenous Peoples Law from the University of Tulsa College of Law. His academic credentials are further supported by a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Classics from the University of Arizona.
Throughout his distinguished career, Judge Utsey has held numerous judicial positions, including Associate Judge for the Yavapai-Apache Nation, Deputy Judge for the Colorado River Indian Tribes, and Judge Pro Tempore for the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. He also spent more than ten years in private practice, focusing on tribal and state court matters involving domestic relations, guardianships, probate, and civil rights.
A dedicated advocate for tribal justice systems and community education, Judge Utsey previously served as a staff attorney and acting director for the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Legal Services Office. In this role, he not only represented clients but also led educational initiatives and supervised legal support teams.
Beyond the courtroom, Judge Utsey has remained active in civic and professional service. He has served for many years on the University of Tulsa College of Law’s Dean Advisory Board and has held leadership roles within the Native American Law Students Association.
The ceremony opened with an invocation by Vice President Paul Russell. Following the administration of the oath, a traditional blessing was offered by Elder Donald Beckman. Chief Judge Utsey then shared a few heartfelt remarks with those in attendance.
“Each person who comes before this court requires dignity, fairness, and impartiality,” he said.
“We need to treat them with that fairness but also justice which means the consequences of their actions. That will be my goal and my motivation to do so and continue that traditional excellence. Thank you for placing your trust in me as your new Chief Judge.”
