HAPPY 123RD BIRTHDAY, FORT MCDOWELL
By Harrison J. Bahe
On September 15, 2026, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation celebrated its 123rd birthday, marking 123 years since President Theodore Roosevelt signed a document in 1903 setting aside the land surrounding the old Camp McDowell as a reservation and granting ownership of that land to the Yavapai people, who had recently returned from San Carlos, Arizona, after being forcibly removed and held there for nearly 25 years.
The celebration was hosted by the Fort McDowell Museum & Culture Center in the large auditorium of the Recreation Center, bringing together the community to celebrate the Nation’s long and storied history.
The event began with a blessing from former President Raphael Bear, followed by brief remarks from current President Sandra Pattea. Bear also sang the traditional birthday song in Yavapai, essentially taking the familiar “Happy Birthday to You” song and translating it into the Yavapai language.
Royalty, both past and present, also greeted everyone in attendance with warm welcomes before Culture Director Clissene Lewis gave a presentation on the history of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation. Her presentation featured several newly uncovered pieces of history. Terrance Williams and his drum group then filled the auditorium with the sound of traditional songs. Members of the audience linked arms and danced circles near the main stage. The main showcase of the birthday celebration concluded with Bear and Donald Beckman singing a traditional birthday song in Yavapai.
Following the celebration’s main program, partygoers lined up for dinner, which included pizza, fruit, and a variety of desserts. Raffle winners were announced throughout the evening, with many attendees walking away with gifts. Children also received various prizes, including toys and candy.
Finally, the birthday cake was cut and served to a sea of smiling Yavapai faces, bringing the evening’s festivities to a sweet conclusion. The Fort McDowell Museum and Culture Center extends its thanks to everyone who came together to celebrate 123 years of sovereignty, victories, gains, triumphs, and prosperity. Happy birthday, Fort McDowell!
