DOMESTIC ABUSE AWARENESS EVENT PROTECTS WHAT’S SACRED

On October 23, 2025, a Domestic Violence Awareness event was held at the Recreation Center under the powerful theme, “Protect What’s Sacred.” The event brought together community members, advocates, and organizations dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic abuse and educating the public about available resources.
Information booths filled the Rec Center entrance, each offering valuable materials, guides, and personal connections for anyone experiencing domestic violence or for those seeking to help loved ones in need. Representatives from numerous organizations were in attendance, including H’man Quadi Yay’ee Home Visitation, the Inter-Tribal Council of Arizona Inc., the Southwest Indigenous Women’s Coalition, Three Precious Miracles, the Domestic Violence Program, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation Crisis Response Team, the Office of the Prosecutor, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation Domestic Violence Program, Wassaja Family Services, Threads of Time – A Beaded Legacy, the Phoenix Indian Center, and the Urban Indian Coalition of Arizona. Each organization shared information on different forms of abuse and offered contact details for specialized services. Attendees were also treated to small giveaways such as pens, stickers, tote bags, pamphlets, and candy for children.
The event was led by Rudy Pattea, the Nation’s Domestic Violence Advocate, who opened the gathering with introductions and a heartfelt message about the importance of awareness and open dialogue. Pattea, who earned his bachelor’s degree in public service and public policy, developed a passion for criminal justice that led him to intern at the Nation’s Prosecutor’s Office, where he later rose to his current role.
“It’s a pretty difficult topic to discuss, especially if you’ve experienced domestic violence personally.”
Pattea shared. “But I promise you that we are trying to provide a safe place for you to share your stories and experiences and feel welcome in this area.”
The atmosphere throughout the event was both warm and supportive, fostering open communication and understanding. Thanks to gatherings like this, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation community continues to strengthen awareness and compassion, ensuring that no one faces domestic violence alone.
