CYCLING CLASS MAKES YOU FEEL THE BURN

August 1st, 2024 marks the first day of Andrew Gonzales’ exercise program with dates and events scattered throughout the month. The first of four of his classes this month is the Cycling Class which is held in the Wellness Room at the Fort McDowell Recreation Center.

“We use stationary bikes that have flywheels that allow us to keep pedaling,” Fitness specialist Andrew Gonzales shares. “The purpose of [the cycle class] is to improve cardiovascular fitness through aerobic exercise. We do climbs, we do sprints, we do jumps, we do intervals, we change up the intensity by increasing resistance”

Four participants including instructor Andrew Gonzales gathered in the modestly sized Wellness Room at the Recreation Center where six stationary bikes sat. The routines began with introductory workouts that were slow and less tedious but, as the class went on, the routines became more and more demanding. Lively music blared out as the rhythmic beats assisted the participants with their workouts; some which ran in sync with the beat.

Climbs in cycling workouts include raising the resistance of the pedals replicating the feeling of cycling uphill. Sprints, or jumping, include putting your pedals at mid resistance, standing up, and running in place while cycling. If this all seems pretty intense for you, don’t worry! Gonzales can personalize a workout specifically for you based on your physical needs or restraints.

The class itself lasted for thirty five minutes as each participant felt the intense burn of the cycling workouts. “[It] benefits me by giving me more energy and [it’s] something I look forward to the whole week,” Participant Francisca Dorchester shares who recently started exercising again. “I think it makes you better inside as a person to go and start your day when you get some kind of group exercises [in].”

“It [has] bettered me, like, just [the] intensity of my workouts and has drastically improved my cardio,” Zachery Sponseller shares. “I’ve been doing a lot better now since taking this class.”

So, whether you’re an experienced cyclist or an inexperienced beginner, be sure to attend Gonzales’ cycling class. “It’s a great exercise. [You can work up a] great sweat [and] you can burn a lot of calories, so this will help with weight loss and improve cardiovascular fitness,” Andrew Gonzales concludes. The next cycling classes will be held on August 6th, 8th, 20th, and 29th at 12pm in the Wellness Room at the Fort McDowell Recreation Center.
